Zinc oxide has been used for centuries in medicinal ointments and salves to treat a variety of skin ailments. Today, it is the broadest spectrum UVA and UVB absorber that is approved for use as a sunscreen by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration making it the optimal choice for natural sunscreen.  
A compound called umbelliferone, or 7-hydroxycoumarin, is found in carrot seed essential oil. This compound absorbs UVB light therefore helping boost the SPF.
